In Support of Hated Pairings
So today, here's a little defense for a Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu pairing that gets a lot of flack: Levin/Sylvia. To break it down, he's a runaway prince who gets a badass holy weapon considered one of the best in the game, and she's a flirty traveling dancer with the hots for him. While the pairing has a good-sized band of supporters, there's twice as many who knock it for both stat and story reasons.
Argument 1: "Sylvia's just a slutty dancer he had a good time with, they'd never really love each other!"
That depends on the actions of the player. If you hook Levin up with Fury or Tiltyu, then yeah, Sylvia was just a fling. But even that doesn't mean he never gave a damn about her as a friend! And if you do hook them up, it's clear he loves her, especially when you read his convo with Sylvia's daughter Lynn.
Argument 2: "Holsety is completely wasted on anyone but Fury's son Sety, Corple's a priest and your priests shouldn't fight anyway because their stats aren't good enough."
No it isn't. You wanna talk wasted, pair Claude/Tiltyu and watch the Valkyrie staff sit there and take up valuable space in Arthur's inventory. :P Or pair Levin with anyone other than Fury, Sylvia or Tiltyu-Skasha, Lester, Delmud and Patty can't even USE Holsety. Also? Sety doesn't even NEED Holsety to be a good sage. You'd get just as good results from a Sety with major Blagi or minor Fala...hell, even a Noish!Sety can be badass with all those skills.
As for Corple? Okay, he comes in late at level 1 unpromoted and you don't get the all-important Pursuit skill with this pairing. That puts him at a disadvantage. But in my experience, he's not only been worth the wait to level him to 20, but he ends up fast and lucky enough for Berserk and Continue to kick in almost every time. And there ARE ways to level him up quicker, but I'll go into that some other time.
Argument 3: "Levin/Fury is CANON!"
Well, yes, Thracia 776 and the unofficial manga makes it so. And that's fine. But just because something isn't canon doesn't mean people have no right to ship it. Shipping non-canon couples =/= going over to a creator's house and spitting in his or her face while burning their hard work and putting it out with dog piss.
Argument 4: "You just hate Levin/Fury!"
Yes, there are some Levin/Sylvia shippers who don't like that pairing, and that's their preference. But they don't represent every Levin/Sylvia shipper on the internet. Nor do the ones who prefer the pairing but have nothing against Levin/Fury, or the ones who *gasp* like both pairings equally. On the flip side, not all Levin/Fury shippers bash Levin/Sylvia. Fire Emblem fandom...or at least Seisen fandom isn't like Harry Potter where the batshit Harmonians make the sane ones look bad by association.
Now, I have no problem with people who truly believe the above. Some fans just can't see Levin/Sylvia and prefer canon. That alone is fine. What DOES bother me is when people use the above arguments as a way of telling Levin/Sylvia shippers "your opinion is wrong, I'm going to tell you what you should be doing instead". That attitude is a primary cause of shipping wars and it sucks ass.
